What Is Atlas Orthogonal?
If you’ve never heard of Atlas Orthogonal, you’re not alone.
In fact, one of the first questions I hear from new patients is, “How is this different from regular chiropractic?”
It’s a great question because Atlas Orthogonal isn’t simply another chiropractic technique—it’s an entirely different way of looking at the relationship between the head, neck, nervous system, and the rest of the body.
More importantly, it’s based on one simple idea:
Small changes at the top of the spine can have a significant impact on the way the rest of the body functions.
đź’ˇ Dr. Ed Explains
“I tell patients the atlas is the CEO of the spine. Wherever it goes, the rest of the spine follows. When the atlas is out of position, the rest of the body often has to compensate.”
What Is the Atlas?
The atlas is the very first bone in your neck. It supports your head while allowing you to look up, down, and from side to side.
Unlike most vertebrae, the atlas has a unique shape and remarkable freedom of movement. That mobility is one of the reasons it’s so important—but it’s also why it’s more vulnerable to becoming misaligned after injuries, repetitive stress, poor posture, or even years of everyday wear and tear.
Because the atlas sits directly beneath the skull, even a small change in its position may influence the way your head, neck, and spine work together.
Why Precision Matters
One of the biggest differences between Atlas Orthogonal and traditional chiropractic care is precision.
Instead of making a generalized adjustment, we begin by taking specialized X-rays to determine the exact position of your atlas.
Those images allow us to calculate the specific angle needed for your correction.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all adjustment because every patient’s anatomy is different.
🧠Did You Know?
Atlas Orthogonal focuses on correcting the position of the atlas by millimeters—not inches. That level of precision is one of the reasons so many patients are surprised by how gentle the procedure feels.
There’s No Twisting or Cracking
Many people avoid chiropractic care because they’re nervous about having their neck twisted or hearing a loud “pop.”
Atlas Orthogonal is different.
After your measurements are complete, a specialized percussion instrument delivers a gentle mechanical impulse designed specifically for your anatomy.
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is.
In fact, one of the comments we hear most often is:
“That’s it? I barely felt anything.”
Why Don’t More Chiropractors Practice Atlas Orthogonal?
Atlas Orthogonal is a highly specialized upper cervical technique that requires additional education, advanced imaging, and precise analysis.
It’s very different from the generalized spinal adjustments many people associate with chiropractic care.
Because of the additional training involved, relatively few chiropractors dedicate their practice to Atlas Orthogonal.
Who Can Benefit From Atlas Orthogonal?
Every patient is different, which is why a thorough evaluation is so important.
Many people seek Atlas Orthogonal care because they’re experiencing recurring issues such as:
- Neck pain
- Recurring headaches
- Migraine headaches
- Vertigo or dizziness
- Sciatica
- TMJ discomfort
- Poor posture
- Chronic back pain
While these conditions can have many possible causes, evaluating the upper cervical spine may help determine whether atlas alignment is one piece of the puzzle.
