Can Neck Problems Cause Headaches?
Absolutely—and it’s something I see every week in our office.
Many people think headaches begin in the head. Sometimes they do. But many recurring headaches actually begin with problems in the neck, especially the upper cervical spine.
If you’ve been treating headaches for months—or even years—without lasting relief, it may be time to ask a different question.
Could your neck be part of the reason your headaches keep coming back?
Why the Neck Matters
Your neck does much more than support the weight of your head.
It also protects some of the most important neurological and vascular structures in your body.
The upper cervical spine surrounds the brainstem and provides a pathway for nerves, blood vessels, and cerebrospinal fluid traveling between your brain and the rest of your body.
When this area isn’t functioning as well as it should, the body may compensate in ways that contribute to recurring discomfort.
💡 Dr. Ed Explains
“Many headaches don’t actually begin in the head. Sometimes the real problem starts at the top of the neck, where the head and spine meet.”
Why Do Headaches Often Start at the Base of the Skull?
One of the most common complaints I hear is:
“My headache always starts right here…”
Patients usually point to the base of their skull.
That isn’t a coincidence.
The upper neck contains an incredible concentration of muscles, joints, nerves, and blood vessels in a very small space. When the atlas becomes misaligned, the surrounding tissues may become irritated, placing additional stress on this area.
That’s one reason headaches often begin at the base of the skull before spreading toward the forehead or behind the eyes.
How Can You Tell if Your Headache May Be Coming From Your Neck?
Every patient is different, but some common clues include:
- Headaches that begin in the neck or base of the skull
- Neck stiffness before the headache starts
- Pain when turning your head
- Recurring headaches after long hours at a computer
- Headaches following a car accident or whiplash injury
- Morning headaches after sleeping
These symptoms don’t automatically mean your neck is the cause, but they do suggest the upper cervical spine deserves a closer look.
🧠 Did You Know?
Patients with chronic headaches often tell us they also experience:
- Neck pain
- Dizziness or vertigo
- Migraine headaches
- Jaw pain (TMJ)
- Difficulty concentrating
- Shoulder tightness
Looking at the whole picture often provides more answers than treating each symptom individually.
What About Morning Headaches?
Waking up with a headache isn’t something you should simply accept as normal.
Poor sleeping posture, inadequate pillow support, jaw clenching, or mechanical stress involving the upper neck may all contribute to morning headaches.
If headaches are becoming part of your daily routine, it’s worth investigating why instead of simply reaching for another pain reliever.
How Atlas Orthogonal Care Is Different
Atlas Orthogonal care focuses on the precise alignment of the atlas—the top bone in the neck.
Unlike traditional chiropractic techniques that may involve twisting or popping the neck, Atlas Orthogonal uses detailed imaging and a specialized precision instrument to make gentle corrections.
The goal isn’t simply to reduce today’s headache.
The goal is to improve stability in the upper cervical spine and address one possible mechanical contributor to recurring headaches.
The Corsello Difference
At Upper Cervical Health of Connecticut, we don’t believe every headache has the same cause.
That’s why every patient receives an individualized evaluation.
We take time to understand when your headaches started, what makes them worse, what makes them better, and whether the upper cervical spine could be playing a role.
Finding the underlying cause is always more valuable than simply chasing symptoms.
Let’s Find Out What’s Behind Your Headaches
If recurring headaches are interfering with your work, family life, or sleep, we’d love the opportunity to help you better understand what’s happening.
