Can an Atlas Misalignment Cause Vertigo?

If you’ve ever experienced vertigo, you know how unsettling it can be.

One moment you’re standing perfectly still. The next, it feels like the room is spinning around you.

Many patients tell me they’ve seen multiple doctors, had imaging, tried medications, and still don’t have a clear explanation for why they’re dizzy.

One of the first questions I ask is surprisingly simple.

“Have you ever had your upper neck evaluated?”

Most people haven’t.

That doesn’t necessarily mean your neck is causing your vertigo, but because of the important role the upper cervical spine plays in balance and posture, it’s an area that deserves careful attention.

💡 Dr. Ed Explains

“Your body is constantly trying to answer one question: ‘Where is level?’ If the atlas becomes misaligned, your body may begin compensating to keep your eyes level with the horizon. Over time, that can affect posture, balance, and how you move.”

Your Balance System Is More Complex Than Most People Realize

Most people assume balance comes from the inner ear alone.

The truth is, your body relies on several systems working together every second of every day.

Your brain gathers information from your eyes, your inner ears, your muscles and joints, and your nervous system to determine where your body is in space.

When those systems communicate efficiently, balance feels effortless.

When they don’t, you may begin experiencing dizziness, instability, or vertigo.

Why the Upper Neck Matters

The atlas is the top bone in your spine. It supports your head and surrounds the brainstem, one of the most important communication centers in the body.

Because of its unique position, even a small misalignment may influence posture and the way your body interprets balance information.

I often explain it this way.

Your head weighs about the same as a bowling ball.

If that bowling ball is perfectly balanced over your shoulders, your muscles don’t have to work very hard.

Move it forward even slightly, and suddenly your muscles are working overtime just to keep you upright.

Your nervous system is constantly making those kinds of adjustments without you even realizing it.

🧠 Did You Know?

Many patients who struggle with dizziness or vertigo also report:

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Recurring headaches
  • Migraine headaches
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Poor balance while walking
  • Feeling “off” or unsteady
  • Motion sensitivity

Looking at these symptoms together often provides more valuable information than treating each one individually.

Why Vertigo Isn’t Always an Ear Problem

The inner ear is certainly one possible cause of vertigo, but it’s not the only one.

I’ve seen many patients who spent months treating only the ear because that’s where they were told the problem was.

Sometimes that’s exactly right.

Sometimes it isn’t.

If dizziness continues despite treatment, it’s reasonable to evaluate whether the upper cervical spine could be contributing to the body’s balance system.

That’s why every patient deserves an individualized examination rather than assumptions based solely on symptoms.

How Atlas Orthogonal Is Different

Atlas Orthogonal care focuses on precision.

Rather than twisting or forcefully manipulating the neck, we use specialized imaging to determine the exact position of the atlas before making a gentle correction using a precision instrument.

The goal is to improve alignment and stability at the top of the spine while allowing the body to function with less compensation.

Patients are often surprised by how gentle the procedure feels.

In fact, one of the most common comments we hear is:

“I thought there would be twisting or cracking…I barely felt anything.”

Could Your Neck Be Part of the Puzzle?

Vertigo can have many different causes, which is why a proper diagnosis is so important.

However, if you’ve been searching for answers without success, it may be worthwhile to have your upper cervical spine evaluated as part of a comprehensive approach.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another medication.

Sometimes it’s simply asking a different question.

The Corsello Difference

At Upper Cervical Health of Connecticut, we don’t chase symptoms—we look for patterns.

When someone comes to our office with dizziness or vertigo, we don’t assume the neck is the answer.

Instead, we take time to understand your health history, your injuries, when the symptoms started, and whether the mechanics of your upper cervical spine could be contributing to the problem.

That thoughtful, individualized approach is what makes Atlas Orthogonal care different.
